John 5: Who Make You Whole?
Verse of the Day: (V15) “The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.”
1. Whole (V1-16)
V5 “And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.”
There was a man who had an illness for thirty eight years, and had been waiting by a pool called Bethesda to be healed. At a certain time, an angel would come to the pool to stir the water, and whoever reached the pool first, shall be healed. This man waited for thirty eight years, and each time when he got closer to the pool, someone else would have gone into the pool, and was healed. This was why he was thankful to Jesus as Jesus immediately made him whole without him going to the pool. Hence, he believed that Jesus was the Son of God who could make him not only physically but spiritually whole.
V15 “The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.”
2. Will (V17-38)
V19 “Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”
Jesus explained to the Jews that whatever works He was doing, He was doing all for God, the Father, and not for Himself. Indeed, Jesus left the throne of heaven to live among the people, then taught and preached to them, healed the sick, raised the dead, cast out demons, and subsequently was betrayed, arrested, crucified, buried and rose again, was all according to the will of God. There was nothing that Jesus did which was for Himself.
V30 “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”
3. Words (V39-47)
V44 “How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?”
Jesus rebuked the Jews that instead of honouring and praising Him as He was the Son of God, they were honouring and praising one another. Jesus knew that their hearts were hardened. They refused to hear and obey Jesus’ words, just like they refused to believe in Moses’ writings when Moses had time and again mentioned Him as the Son of God.
V47 “But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, thank You that the Lord Jesus Christ has made me spiritually whole.
John 4: Who Is The Saviour Of The World?
Verse of the Day: V42 “And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
1. Samaria (V1-30)
V4 “And he must needs go through Samaria.”
During Jesus’ time, no Jew would go through Samaria in order to get to Galilee, because the Jews despised the Samaritans who were mostly poor and of a mixed multitude as a result of the intermarriage between the Jews and the Gentiles. However, Jesus, being a Jew, did not despise the Samaritans and still chose to go through Samaria, because He knew that there was a Samaritan woman as well as the entire city of Samaria, who needed to hear His message of salvation, and believe and receive Him as their Christ and Saviour.
V29 “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”
2. Saviour (V31-42)
V41 “And many more believed because of his own word;”
When the Samaritan woman introduced Jesus Christ to the people in the city of Samaria, they quickly went to Jesus to see for themselves whether Jesus was truly Christ, the Saviour of the world. When they finally saw and heard Jesus, they immediately believed that Jesus was indeed the Christ, the Saviour, and in particular, their personal Saviour.
V42 “And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
3. Seventh (V43-54)
V52 “Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
A nobleman went to Jesus believing that Jesus would heal his dying son. When he returned home, his servants told him that his son was healed. When he enquired of them of the hour his son was healed, they told him he was healed at the seventh hour, which was exactly the same hour which Jesus said to him that his son shall be heal. As a result, he and his entire family truly believed that Jesus was indeed the Son of God, the Saviour.
V53 “So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, thank You that the Lord Jesus Christ is my personal Saviour.
John 2: Do You Believe In Miracles? Verse of the Day: V23 “Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.”
1. Marriage (V1-14)
V2 “And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.”
Jesus performed His first miracle at His friend’s marriage when He turned water into wine, and immediately His disciples believed on Him. Jesus was helpful when He was on earth, as He did not hesitate to help the bridegroom when there was no wine for his guests.
V11 “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”
2. Merchandise (V15-22)
V15 “And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;”
Jesus was angry with the people because they had made the house of God as the house of merchandise. Instead of praying and worshipping in God’s house, they were buying and selling their merchandise, such as sheep, oxen and doves, and changing money. They were more interested in making money and enriching themselves materially, than seeking God and enriching themselves spiritually. Hence Jesus chased them out of God’s house. Indeed, let us make God’s house as the house of prayer for us to worship and pray to Him.
V16 “And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.”
3. Miracles (V23-25)
V23 “Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.”
Though many believed in Jesus because He had performed many miracles, yet Jesus did not fully believe them as He knew the hearts of man. He knew that many of them only believed Him because they had witnessed His miracles of turning water into wine, healing the blind, raising the dead, etc., but deep down in their hearts, they had doubts. Indeed, when Jesus was betrayed, arrested and subsequently crucified, many of His disciples forsook Him. Let us know that God can truly perform miracles not just in the past, but in the present, as well as the future, and there is nothing impossible with God.
V24 “But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, I believe in miracles and there is nothing impossible with You.
John 3: Do You Believe In Jesus?
Verse of the Day: V16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
1. Born (V1-13)
V4 “Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”
Jesus explained to Nicodemus that to be born again meant that besides being born from his mother’s womb, Nicodemus must be born again into God’s spiritual kingdom by believing that Jesus was truly the Son of God, and receiving Him as his personal Saviour.
V5 “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
2. Believeth (V14-24)
V16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Indeed, God loves the world, including you and me, that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins, that if we believe and receive Jesus as our personal Saviour and Lord, we shall have everlasting life with Him now and forever. However, if we do not believe in Jesus, we are already condemned, because we are born sinners.
V18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
3. Bride (V25-36)
V27 “John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.”
John the Baptist pointed to the people that Jesus was the Bridegroom, and He was preparing for His bride, the church. The church consists of all who believe and receive Jesus as their Saviour, and are baptized by water and added to the church. Though John was not part of the church because he died before Jesus started His church, yet he rejoiced greatly that Jesus came from heaven to die and shed His precious blood for the sins of the world. Today we are the church, and Jesus is our Bridegroom and our Saviour!
V29 “He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, I believe in Jesus that He is indeed Your only begotten Son.
John 1: Who Is The Word?
Verse of the Day: V1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1. Word (V1-14)
V1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Jesus was the Word. Since the beginning, Jesus was with God, the Father. It was God’s plan that Jesus became man to dwell among mankind, and subsequently to die and shed His precious blood not for His own sins, but the sins of the whole world, for you and me.
V14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
2. Wilderness (V15-28)
V19 “And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?”
John the Baptist introduced himself to the priests and Levites as the man in the wilderness preparing for the coming of the Messiah. He preached to them that the prophecy of the prophets of the Old Testament, including Esaias, had been miraculously fulfilled, as God indeed became man, to save sinners, from fiery hell to pearly heaven.
V23 “He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.”
3. Water (V29-51)
V33 “And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.”
God, the Father, spoke to John the Baptist, that Jesus shall be the one that the Spirit of God shall descend after John had baptized Jesus with water. Indeed John witnessed the Spirit descending like a dove upon Jesus. While John baptized Jesus with water, Jesus baptizes every believer with the Holy Ghost. Today Jesus baptizes us by sending the Holy Ghost to dwell within us when we believe and accept Jesus as our personal Saviour. After the Holy Ghost has dwelt within us, the next step is for us to be baptized into the water, which is an act of our obedience to God, that we desire to be like Jesus, buried in the water of death, and raised in the newness of life, to serve the true and living God.
V34 “And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Word, the Son of God.
Luke 24: Who Has Risen?
Verse of the Day: V6 “He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,”
1. Risen (V1-7)
V4 “And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:”
Jesus’ disciples went to Jesus’ grave to offer spices for His body, and discovered that the stone covering the grave had been rolled away, and His body was missing from the grave. They were curious as to where Jesus’ body was, until two angels told them that Jesus had risen from the dead, as Jesus had earlier prophesied to them when He was in Galilee.
V6 “He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,”
2. Remembered (V8-35)
V8 “And they remembered his words,”
Jesus’ disciples remembered Jesus’ words that He would be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day He rose again conquering death. They then quickly left the grave and went to the rest of the disciples, and told them of Jesus’ words, and His resurrection from the dead. Finally all the disciples believed in Jesus’ words that He was truly the Son of God, and had power over death. Those who truly believe in Jesus, though we shall eventually die, yet our souls shall never perish in the fiery pits of hell, but we shall have everlasting life with Him in the portals of heaven.
V9 “And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.”
3. Repentance (V36-53)
V46 “And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:”
Indeed, Jesus came to this earth to suffer and die on the cruel cross, and shed His precious blood for the sins of the world, that whosoever believes in Him, and repent his sins, shall have everlasting life with Him in heaven. Jesus commands all who believes and receives Him as their personal Saviour to preach His Gospel, which is His death, burial, resurrection and His return again to judge the world, to all the people of the world.
V47 “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, I believe that You are the Son of God, and have risen from the dead.
Luke 23: Who Crucify Christ?
Verse of the Day: V21 “But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.”
1. Crucify (V1-26)
V14 “Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:”
Pilate, the Roman governor of Palestine, found Jesus not guilty. However in order to please the Jews, he gave them a choice of whether to crucify Jesus or Barabbas, a criminal, during the feast of Passover where it was a tradition for them to release one of the criminals. The Jews chose to crucify Jesus, even though Jesus was not a criminal, and there was no fault found in Him. However, it is not really the Jews who crucified Jesus. Ultimately, it is all the people of the world, including you and me, who have crucified Jesus, because we have sinned against God. This is why God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins, so that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish in the fiery pits of hell, but shall have everlasting life with God in the portals of heaven.
V21 “But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.”
2. Calvary (V27-33)
V33 “And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.”
Even though Jesus had no fault or sin in His life, He humbled Himself and was willing to be crucified on Calvary for the sins of the whole world. Imagine Jesus, the Son of God, left the glory of heaven, to become the son of a lowly carpenter, and to die a cruel and humiliating death on the cross, not for His own sins, but for the sins of the whole world.
“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:8)
3. Centurion (V34-56)
V46 “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”
Even in death, Jesus led a soul to heaven. The centurion, who was in charge of the entire crucifixion, after witnessing Jesus’ trial and final moment of death, realised that Jesus was indeed a righteous man, the Son of God, as He peacefully committed His life to God.
V47 “Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, thank You that You are crucified because of my sins.
Luke 22: How To Be The Greatest?
Verse of the Day: V26 “But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.”
1. Glad (V1-6)
V4 “And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.”
It was sad that the chief priests and scribes were glad when they discovered that Judas was willing to betray Jesus for money. Instead of being glad that Jesus came to preach the Word and heal the sick, they were jealous of Jesus because He was a threat to their power and influence. Nevertheless, Jesus’ betrayal, death and resurrection were the fulfilment of God’s prophecy of the shedding of His precious blood as the penalty of the sins of the whole world, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.
V5 “And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
2. Greatest (V7-46)
V24 “And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.”
It was sad that Jesus’ disciples were arguing and disputing as to who would be the greatest among them, beside their Master and Teacher, Jesus Christ. Instead of focusing on Jesus’ Word and work, they were striving for position and power. Thus Jesus taught them that the greatest among them shall be like the youngest who shall serve his elder. Indeed God’s leadership, unlike man’s leadership, is all about love, humility and service.
V26 “But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.”
3. Galilean (V47-71)
V59 “And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilean.”
Peter denied before the people that he was a Galilean, but he could never hide his strong Galilean’s accent. Finally, Peter repented his sins when he heard the cock crew thrice as Jesus had earlier prophesied. Indeed we can never hide our Christianity from others because God shall convict our hearts and give us no peace until we repent our sins and return to Him. Once a Galilean, always a Galilean. Once a Christian, always a Christian.
V60 “And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, please humble me to know that only You are the greatest.
Luke 21: Are You The Poor Widow?
Verse of the Day: V3 “And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:”
1. Widow (V1-4)
V3 “And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:”
When Jesus saw the rich men giving their gifts as offerings to God in the temple, He pointed the poor widow to them. Jesus told them that God shall richly bless the poor widow though she only gave her two mites or coppers, because she had given her all to Him, and had fully trusted God to provide for all her needs. Let us give our very best to God, and see how God richly bless and keep us in His perfect peace and everlasting love.
V4 “For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”
2. Words (V5-33)
V11 “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”
Jesus told the people that there shall be fearful sights and great signs of His imminent return to judge the world, such as great earthquakes, violent wars, terrible famines and deadly diseases that shall not only destroy millions of lives, but everything in this entire world, including the heaven (atmosphere) and the earth. Only God’s words shall remain forever. Hence, let us study and hide God’s eternal words in our hearts, that we shall not sin against the holy God, but live a holy and an obedient life that is well pleasing to Him.
V33 “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”
3. Watch (V34-38)
V34 “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.”
Jesus warned the people time and again to always watch and pray, and flee from worldly lusts and material pursuits, and follow after God’s holiness and righteousness. However, if we continue in our sins and wickedness, then let us expect God’s impending fiery judgment of terrible disasters and deadly diseases to be upon us. The choice is yours!
V36 “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, please help me to be like the poor widow giving my all to You.
Luke 20: Are You A Scribe? Verse of the Day: V46 “Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;”
1. Son (V1-18)
V13 “Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. “
Jesus taught the people of a parable of a man who owned a vineyard, and employed farmers to tend to it. At harvest time he sent his servant to the farmers to collect the fruits from the vineyard, but instead they beat him. The owner then sent a second servant, and he was also beaten. He sent the third, and he too was beaten. Finally he sent his beloved son thinking that they might respect him, but instead they killed him. This parable was a prophesy of Jesus Himself who came to save the world, but the world crucified Him.
V15 “So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him, What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?”
2. Sadducees (V19-44)
V27 “Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,”
The Sadducees, who did not believe in resurrection, trapped Jesus by asking Him who would be the husband of the woman in heaven as she had seven husbands who died one after another. It was in Moses’ law that when the husband died without children, his wife would marry his brother, and in this case, he had six brothers, and all died without children. Jesus knew the trap and deceit of the Sadducees, and He taught them that in heaven there would be no marriage, and it did not matter who the woman’s husband was.
V35 “But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:”
3. Scribes (V45-47)
V46 “Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;”
Jesus taught His disciples that the scribes who abused their authority by taking advantage of the widows’ property, and making long prayers to show that they were more spiritual than the rest of the people, shall be severely punished for their deceit and hypocrisy.
V47 “Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.”
Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, please help me to be a sincere son of God and never a scribe.
